This is a very accessible update on the research and trends in computer system hardware. Even the software guys need to stay on top of it, though. Crypto features? They're showing up under DRM and networking protocols. Memory hierarchies? Why do you think it took so long for the very skilled Java implementors to get volatility right? Multi-core and multi-threading? Your OS, compiler, embedded system, core libraries, and lots more can use the features right - or not.
As an added benefit, the regular issue is replaced by conference proceedings once in a while, at no additional cost. This month it was ISCA - the International Conference on Computer Archtiecture.
If you work in the future, in the next generation of systems, at the place where hardware and software become indistinct, this needs to be in your mailbox. For the price (the real ACM member price, not the inflated non-member amount), there really isn't a better way to stay ahead.
