I subscribe to all of the US based guitar magazines and one of the European mags. This is the best of the US mags. The writing is done well, interviews are thorough and the gear coverage is fantastic. I am turned off by "Guitar World"'s juvenile writing and articles. "Guitar Player", while the better of the two, is a little too artist-centric for my tastes. The stock of "Premiere Guitar" magazine is top notch and the photography is fantastic. While the layout design maybe considered by some as austere or vanilla, it is a pleasant change of pace from the wild, and at times neurotic, layouts of GW. Best of all, Premiere Guitar is huge every month! It typically spans almost 250 pages.
The minuses? There are no tabbed songs. The reviews, like all of the US based magazines, are far from objective. I don't understand if it is some sort of pact they sign with their advertisers but none of the US magazines seem to want to upset anyone by giving bad reviews. If I ever find a US based mag that is truly independent and not in bed with the advertisers, I will gladly subscribe for life. Lastly, the magazine is free on their website. I suppose you could say this is probably more fitting for the plus column. I prefer to pay the nominal subscription fee and have a hard copy delivered, but I feel silly at times for paying for something I don't have to.
Highly recommended.
