(More customer reviews)Since the book was titled, "The Great American Afghan," I expected the blocks to have an American or Outdoors motif. They did not--there were only 3 blocks like that: twining oak leaves, evergreen trees, and a cat. The cat, by the way, is pretty boring so I intend to add interest by using two different color yarns. The book would have been better titled: An Afghan book of famous designers' favorite patterns. Some of the patterns are downright disappointing and boring. It is only the color theme of browns, greens, and burgundies that gives the afghan an outdoors feel.
What I like about the book is that it lists what are easy patterns and what are challenging. I started with the most challenging and it's just a matter of keeping really good track of what stitch your on.
I also like that the book provides directions both with words and with charts. What I don't like is the editor's use of the English Language--the lack of a colon when presenting a list takes the reader a few minutes to realize it's a list!!! Maybe the experienced knitter knows that but I did not--it was hard to read and took a while to understand what was intended (and I'm a college professor--not a dummy). I love that the book lists the USES of certain types of stitches.
One question I have that maybe someone could answer: why such a complicated Knit Cast On procedure? I understand it is necessary for the bobbles, but why for the initial cast on? Please comment if you know. Thanks.
Overall, the book is not what I was looking for but I like it anyway (excuse the poor sentence structure!!).
